How to choose a colour for my car

Which is the best colour to choose for my car?

This might be a usual concern for most of us while booking a new car. If we ask this question to a group of people, the most common answers would be white, black, silver or red. With a host of new colours available, it has become difficult for us to choose the appropriate colour for our car.
Best Car Color Selection

I agree and understand that the choice of colour for a car is very subjective and depends on an individual’s perspective, feelings, beliefs or desires! But still, we love to know the opinion of others. Scientific studies have shown that the colour of your car say a little bit about its owner, his outlook and character.

If you are still not sure about your car colour, here are some tips and observations that I have noted which will help you to decide to choose the best colour for your next car purchase.

Certain colour suits certain type of cars.
  • White is a dignified colour and the safest choice. It is highly visible at night and can hide swirls or dents easily. If you compare with other popular colours such as red or black, dirt in white colour is not that easily noticeable (though being white). White colour doesn't fade and is easy to maintain. Moreover, white colour has better resale value and has an appealing look on most cars.
  • Black is a classic and elegant colour. Black cars are clearly visible in daylight. They tend to get noticed instantly if given proper care and washed regularly. It looks great right after care. If not kept clean, black colour can show all the scratches, watermarks and other imperfections clearly. They show dirt quickly and are difficult to maintain. Black colours are most suitable for sedan’s and premium cars.
  • Red is an attractive and dynamic colour most suitable for sports cars. It’s definitely an eye catching and vibrant colour. But they do have the tendency to fade and may not look good for all the cars.
  • Silver is a popular colour. At the same time, it looks mundane and unexciting. Silver is popular due to the factor that it is best in hiding dust and tend to look clean for long time. Silver cars are visible at night as their colour reflects light
  • Beige colour hides dirt very well. However, this colour is not very eye catchy and does not get noticed. In certain cars, metallic beige colour adds a luxurious appeal to it and sometimes, it blends with the interiors too. In short, Beige or sand dust colour looks good only for certain car.
  • There are other bright colours such as blue or green. They look attractive and cool when clean. Certain car makers have come out with pink, orange or yellow shades targeting women. But we get bored of these colours if we want to keep the car for long time. Moreover, some may choose these vibrant colours just to stand out from crowd. After all, the choice is yours!
 Few more tips:
  • Don’t just select the car colour by seeing the colour in product brochure or website. There might be colour variation due to print/screen graphics limitation. Always see the car directly in your chosen colour.
  • Note that metallic colour cost more than basic non metallic shades.
  • Car colour depends on the type of car. Some colours suit certain cars and some may not. Mostly, car makers advertise a new car in a colour that suits the car well. That is a hint for you.  Make use of it. ;)
  • Finally, whatever be the colour you choose, always keep your car clean. Wash and service your car regularly. Parking under trees can invite bird poop that can damage the car paint quickly. Also, never try to use local scratch removing chemicals or compounds. It can do more harm that removing the scratch.
Always keep your car happy! I would love to know your comments on this topic.

  1. Great Analysis done.
I would say to avoid black if we don’t have time to wash or keep the car clean regularly. Silver or Beige might be good for them.

  2. Good write up. Choosing car colour is something personal. But for small cars, white is a good choice.

  3. This post is very interesting. I never thought such deeply about colours. I have chosen red for my Hyundai i10. My next car would definitely be a black sedan.

  4. Thanks for sharing this. My preference would be black. Bright colours can be considered only if you intent to use the car for short term.
